The Old Made New Series

How the series started:
Going-Back to Go-Forward and Healing from Past Trauma

As a survivor of psychological and physical trauma, nothing is more painful than revisiting old memories. In the past, those memories crippled me, but today I choose to express my pain/anger/hurt but also love/joy/peace through my art. Engaging in the creative process helps me heal from a deep sense of shame. Art of The Process is a play on words, but also it’s the way in which I go through the process of sanctification . Healing wounds from the past, takes work.

This series captures a few stages of my life; college, post college, the dark years, the redeemed years, and the professional and family years. I worked on various pieces throughout the years, I also destroyed, reshaped, rekindled and mended different kinds of things, sometimes without paint brushes or tools. The series is intimate, it is deeply personal (like a diary), some pieces make me feel vulnerable, but they all point to themes of love, hope, and healing.

The meaning behind the phrase “#ArtofTheProcess” is primarily to emphasize movement of “Process Art”; in that vein my process is most likened to the process of sanctification. The concept behind this serioes “making old things new” is largely influenced by The Gospel and the practice of Kintsugi. All the pieces in the series weave gold into the artwork, either with paint or 24k authentic gold leaf.

Subject Matter
Each artWORK is part of a lifelong narrative, therefore the subject matter ranges from abstract to representational images. However, each piece is approached with the same process Ed’s artWORK emphasizes that The Process is more important than The Product (or the piece of art itself). Therefore, each piece of Art is approached in the same way while the subject matter evolves and varies. Some artWORK may stand alone but all pieces go through a standard process, likened to that of being refined by fire.

Capturing The Process is the #artoftheprocess
Ed’s studio is rigged with the state of the art, technologically sophisticated, audiovisual system comprised of an iPhone12-PRO, a ladder, a gorilla iPhone tripod-thing-that-rocks. Thereby, being able to capture Timelapse videos documenting the accelerated “Process” so anyone can SEE the work involved in making a single piece.

The layers upon layers of materials show the metamorphosis of a piece of art and simultaneously expose the process. Historically, few artists had (or perhaps many today still lack the technology) that could capture one man’s creative process from start to finish. In doing so, similar to a Bob Ross painting, Ed can share his process with anyone in the hopes of demystifying what it means to make art.

Anyone who follows a/the process can then make their own art. My way is NOT the only way to make it Art, it’s one of many ways, but for the uninitiated showing, The Process can be a helpful tool, while you discover your own styles.
